  1. Have both parents had hip and eye checks?

Ask to see hip scores and eye test results for both parents, and elbow scores for the golden retriever.

  2. Which DNA tests has the golden retriever parent had?

The UK’s Royal Kennel Club lists tests for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and ichthyosis.

  3. Which DNA tests has the cocker spaniel parent had?

The UK’s Royal Kennel Club lists tests for PRA, familial nephropathy (FN), adult-onset neuropathy (AON) and acral mutilation syndrome (AMS).

  4. What’s your source number or breeder number?

  6. What’s in the puppy pack?

Before you buy any puppy

  • Meet the puppy and its mother first

Visit where it was raised before you pay anything, including a deposit. A video is a first look. Seeing the parents is the best way to avoid a puppy or kitten farm.

  • Read the RSPCA’s Smart Puppy and Dog Buyer’s Guide

What to ask, what to see and what to check before you commit.

  • Look up a microchip on petaddress

Search the chip number at petaddress.com.au. It may miss chips on NSW and SA registries.

Golden Cocker Retriever questions

How big do golden cocker retrievers get?

No Dogs Australia standard says how big this cross grows, and nobody can promise an adult size. The parent breeds’ standards put a golden retriever at 51 to 61 cm at the shoulder and a cocker spaniel at about 38 to 41 cm. Ask how tall and heavy both parents are.

Are golden cocker retrievers good with kids?

No one can promise a puppy’s nature. Dogs Australia’s standards describe the golden retriever as kindly, friendly and confident, and the cocker spaniel as gentle, affectionate and lively. Meet the mother to see her temperament, and supervise children with any dog.

Do golden cocker retrievers shed?

Both parent breeds shed. Dogs NSW says golden retrievers shed all year, with two heavy moults, and Dogs Victoria says cocker spaniels shed twice a year. No one can promise a cross’s coat, so look at both parents’ coats.

Are golden cocker retrievers hypoallergenic?

No. The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) says all dog breeds cause allergies, though some shed less dander. If allergies are a worry, an allergy specialist can test for a pet allergy before you commit.

How long do golden cocker retrievers live?

We haven’t found a lifespan for this cross from a breed standard or an Australian breed body. Dogs Victoria gives average lifespans for the parent breeds, 10 to 15 years for the golden retriever and 13 to 16 for the cocker spaniel.

Is a golden cocker retriever a recognised breed?

Not by Dogs Australia. None of its seven breed groups lists a golden cocker retriever. Its Gundogs group has the golden retriever, the cocker spaniel and, as a separate breed, the American cocker spaniel. Ask what both parents are, and which cocker.

How much is a Golden Cocker Retriever?

We show a price range once 8 listings from 3 sellers have asked a price. Size, colour and health testing drive the price.

How do I know a seller is genuine?

Every seller passes an ID check before their first listing, and each listing shows its checks and their dates. Then meet the seller and the animal in person before you pay anything, including a deposit. For a breeder’s puppy or kitten, meet its mother too. Ask for the vet check and get papers at handover.
