Questions to ask a Maltipoo breeder

  1. Has the poodle parent had a DNA test for PRA?

Dogs Victoria says toy and miniature poodles should have one. PRA is an inherited eye disease. Ask to see the result.

  2. Which other tests have the parents had?

The UK’s Royal Kennel Club lists an eye test for Maltese, eye and hip tests for toy and miniature poodles, and a DNA test for osteochondrodysplasia (OC) for miniatures.

  3. Has the litter had a bile acid test?

Dogs Victoria recommends one for Maltese puppies. It checks for liver problems such as a liver shunt.

  4. Has a vet checked both parents’ kneecaps and hearts?

Dogs Victoria names loose kneecaps (luxating patellas) in both breeds, and heart problems in the Maltese.

  5. How big are both parents?

A cross has no set size. Ask each parent’s height, and whether the poodle is a toy or a miniature.

  6. What’s your source number or breeder number?

Almost every Victorian dog and cat ad must show a source number, rehomers included. Check it yourself before you pay. How to check a seller’s number

  7. Are the puppies vaccinated and microchipped?

Ask for vaccination dates and each puppy’s microchip number. How to check a seller’s number

  8. What’s in the puppy pack?

Expect a vaccination card, microchip transfer papers, food and care notes.

Maltipoos are one of many crossbreeds that will be listed here.

Before you buy any puppy

  • Meet the puppy and its mother first

Visit where it was raised before you pay anything, including a deposit. A video is a first look. Seeing the parents is the best way to avoid a puppy or kitten farm.

  • Read the RSPCA’s Smart Puppy and Dog Buyer’s Guide

What to ask, what to see and what to check before you commit.

  • Look up a microchip on petaddress

Search the chip number at petaddress.com.au. It may miss chips on NSW and SA registries.

Maltipoo questions

How big do maltipoos get?

It depends on the parents. Dogs Australia’s breed standards put a Maltese at up to 25 cm at the shoulder, a toy poodle under 28 cm and a miniature poodle under 38 cm. Dogs Australia has no standard for the cross, so ask how big both parents grew.

Are maltipoos good with kids?

Dogs Victoria calls the Maltese an excellent family pet as long as young children are supervised while the puppy is young, and says toy and miniature poodles fit in well with families. A cross can vary, so meet the puppy’s mother, and supervise children with any dog.

Are maltipoos hypoallergenic?

No. The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) says all dog breeds cause allergies, although some shed less dander. If allergies are the worry, an allergy specialist can test for a pet allergy before you commit.

How much grooming does a maltipoo need?

Plan for regular brushing and clipping. The RSPCA lists both parent breeds, poodles and Maltese, among dogs that don’t shed their hair, which clipping removes, and says brushing helps prevent mats. A cross’s coat can vary, so look at both parents’ coats.

How long do maltipoos live?

We haven’t found a lifespan for the cross from a kennel body. Dogs Victoria gives average lifespans of 12 to 16 years for the Maltese and 12 to 15 years for toy and miniature poodles.

Are maltipoos healthier than purebred dogs?

We haven’t found a health study of maltipoos. In 2024, Royal Veterinary College researchers compared three other poodle crosses with their parent breeds, using UK owners’ reports on dogs under five, and found their overall health largely similar. Ask for health results on both parents.

How much is a Maltipoo?

We show a price range once 8 listings from 3 sellers have asked a price. Size, colour and health testing drive the price.

How do I know a seller is genuine?

Every seller passes an ID check before their first listing, and each listing shows its checks and their dates. Then meet the seller and the animal in person before you pay anything, including a deposit. For a breeder’s puppy or kitten, meet its mother too. Ask for the vet check and get papers at handover.

Victorian source numbers are checked on the Pet Exchange Register.
