What a dog ad must show, by state

From each state’s law or regulator, checked 10 Oct 2026. Not legal advice.

How to check a seller’s number
Victoria
Almost every ad shows the seller’s source number and each animal’s full microchip number, owners rehoming and rescues included.
NSW
Each dog’s microchip number, or its mother’s for an unchipped puppy up to 8 weeks old. Dogs born from 1 Dec 2025 also show the breeder identification number (BIN). A rehoming organisation that doesn’t know who bred the dog shows its rehoming organisation number (RON) instead, whenever the dog was born.
Queensland
Each dog’s supply number: usually its breeder’s, or an exemption number for that dog.
South Australia
The seller’s name and phone, and each breeder’s name and phone, plus the breeder’s Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) number if they’re registered.
Western Australia
WA law doesn’t currently say which numbers an ad must show.
Tasmania
Puppies under 12 months: the puppy’s or its mother’s microchip number or, if neither is chipped, the mother’s registration number and council.
ACT
Licensed breeders: their breeding licence number. Anyone else: the animal’s microchip number or an identifier for the seller. The ACT Government asks for both.
Northern Territory
We found no territory law on what a dog or cat ad must show. We haven’t checked council by-laws.

Before you buy any puppy

  • Meet the puppy and its mother first

Visit where it was raised before you pay anything, including a deposit. A video is a first look. Seeing the parents is the best way to avoid a puppy or kitten farm.

  • Read the RSPCA’s Smart Puppy and Dog Buyer’s Guide

What to ask, what to see and what to check before you commit.

  • Look up a microchip on petaddress

Search the chip number at petaddress.com.au. It may miss chips on NSW and SA registries.

  • Considered adopting?

Rescue listings open soon. See what to ask before you adopt.

    Before you adopt
  • Check a seller’s number before you pay

Signs of a pet scam

How to spot a pet scam
  • A price far below the rest

A cheap cavoodle with stolen photos is a common hook.

  • Text or WhatsApp only

No call, and no video of the animal with its mother.

  • Pressure to pay by bank transfer

Then extra fees for transport, crates or insurance.

Questions

How old must a puppy be before it goes home?

At least 8 weeks. It’s the law in Tasmania and our rule in every state.

What must a puppy ad show in my state?

It depends on the state. The rules for each state are on this page.

How to check a seller’s number

Should I pay a deposit before I see the puppy?

Not until you’ve visited where the puppy was raised and met it and its mother. A video is a first look. Then pay only into an account in the seller’s name. Once listings open here, that’s the checked name you see after the seller replies.

Is it free to message a seller?

Yes. When listings open, messaging sellers will be free for buyers.

How do I find puppies near me?

When listings open, press Use My Location or type your suburb.

Selling or rehoming a pet?

Free to list. A one-off $9.95 ID check before your first listing.
