Read the price guideQuestions to ask a Rottweiler breeder
Have both parents had hip and elbow x-rays?
Under Dogs Australia’s rules, both parents of a registered Rottweiler litter, if born after 1 January 1997, must be screened for hip and elbow dysplasia. Ask to see both parents’ results.
Have both parents been DNA tested for JLPP?
Under Dogs Australia’s rules, every Rottweiler must be tested before it’s mated, and matings must be clear to clear or clear to carrier. Ask to see both parents’ results.
Have the parents had eye and mouth checks?
The National Rottweiler Council (Australia) tells buyers to ask for certified proof of both parents’ eye and mouth clearances, as well as hips, elbows and JLPP.
Have the parents had any other DNA tests?
The UK’s Royal Kennel Club also lists a DNA test for LEMP-2, a nervous system disease. Ask to see the results: “DNA tested” in an ad isn’t proof.
Which register will the puppy go on?
The National Rottweiler Council (Australia) suggests asking: Main or Limited. Under Dogs Australia’s rules, a Limited Register dog isn’t to be bred from or entered in conformation shows, and a puppy born with a natural bobtail can go on no other register.
Can I see the puppy with its mother where it was raised?
Visit before you pay anything. The National Rottweiler Council (Australia) says to think twice if you can’t meet the mother and pups before you buy.
What’s your source number or breeder number?
Almost every Victorian dog and cat ad must show a source number, rehomers included. Check it yourself before you pay. How to check a seller’s number
Are the puppies vaccinated and microchipped?
Ask for vaccination dates and each puppy’s microchip number. How to check a seller’s number
What’s in the puppy pack?
Expect a vaccination card, microchip transfer papers, food and care notes.

Meet the puppy and its mother first
Visit where it was raised before you pay anything, including a deposit. A video is a first look. Seeing the parents is the best way to avoid a puppy or kitten farm.

Rottweiler questions
How big does a Rottweiler get?
Dogs Australia’s breed standard calls the Rottweiler a medium to large dog. It gives a shoulder height of 61 to 68 cm and a weight of 50 kg for males, and 56 to 63 cm and about 42 kg for females. A standard describes the ideal dog, not any one puppy. Ask how big both parents grew.
Is a Rottweiler good with kids?
It depends on the dog and the household. Dogs NSW’s breed page says that, because of its strength and size, a Rottweiler must always be supervised with young children. Dogs Victoria says the breed should be socialised with people and other animals from an early age, and that children must be supervised at all times when they’re with dogs. Meet the mother to see her temperament.
How long does a Rottweiler live?
Sources differ. Dogs Victoria gives an average life span of 10 to 12 years, and Dogs NSW’s breed page says the breed generally lives 10 to 12 years. The UK’s Royal Kennel Club puts its lifespan at under 10 years. None of these is a promise for any one dog.
Does a Rottweiler shed?
Yes. Dogs Victoria says the coat, a medium-length topcoat over a finer, shorter undercoat, is shed twice a year and needs grooming more often then. It recommends a brush and comb once a week, with a bath as needed. Dogs NSW’s breed page and the UK’s Royal Kennel Club also give weekly grooming.
How much exercise does a Rottweiler need?
Sources differ. Dogs NSW’s breed page gives 40 minutes a day, and the UK’s Royal Kennel Club more than 2 hours a day. Dogs Victoria calls the Rottweiler an active, working breed that becomes destructive when bored, and highly recommends obedience training for its whole life.
Can a Rottweiler be left alone?
The National Rottweiler Council (Australia) says a Rottweiler isn’t suited to being shut in a yard with no stimulation, and is best with an owner who’s willing to work with it. Dogs NSW’s breed page says the breed craves companionship, and is happy as long as it’s with you.
Is a Rottweiler hypoallergenic?
No. The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) says: “All dog breeds cause allergies, although some do not shed as much dander, and therefore less allergen is spread.” It says the main source of dog allergen is saliva. If allergies are the worry, a clinical immunology or allergy specialist can test for a pet allergy before you commit.
What health problems can a Rottweiler have?
Dogs Victoria names hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy (JLPP) among the conditions that may occur in the breed. The National Rottweiler Council (Australia) tells buyers to ask for certified proof of both parents’ clearances for hip and elbow dysplasia, JLPP, and eye and mouth. The UK’s Royal Kennel Club also lists a DNA test for LEMP-2 and an eye test. Ask to see both parents’ results.
Do Rottweiler breeders have to health test?
Under Dogs Australia’s rules, for a registered litter, yes. Parents born after 1 January 1997 must be screened for hip and elbow dysplasia through CHEDS, its x-ray scheme, or a recognised scheme if screened before import. Every Rottweiler must be tested for JLPP before it’s mated (frozen semen can be tested afterwards), and only clear to clear or clear to carrier matings are permitted. An ad’s claim isn’t proof, so ask to see both parents’ results.
What is hip dysplasia?
An inherited condition in which the hip joint forms incorrectly and is loose. Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center says the looseness leads to arthritis, pain and discomfort over time, and names Rottweilers among the breeds it affects. It says overfeeding and rapid growth can make it worse in a puppy that’s already predisposed, and that a dog with normal hips can still produce puppies with it. Ask to see both parents’ hip results.
What is elbow dysplasia?
A fault in how the elbow joint develops. Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center calls it a genetic condition and names the Rottweiler among the breeds it affects. It says affected dogs are generally lame after exercise and don’t recover fully with rest, and that it can’t be cured but can be well managed. It adds that normal parents can produce it, though much less often than parents with bad elbows. Ask to see both parents’ elbow results.
What is JLPP?
Juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy, an inherited disease of the nervous system. The UK’s Royal Kennel Club says the nerve to the voice box is affected first, and that signs include noisy breathing, choking and a wobbly gait. The National Rottweiler Council (Australia) says there’s no cure and that it’s always fatal to affected puppies. For a puppy to be affected, both parents must carry the gene, so ask to see both parents’ JLPP results.
How much is a Rottweiler?
We show a price range once 8 listings from 3 sellers have asked a price. Size, colour and health testing drive the price.
How do I know a seller is genuine?
Every seller passes an ID check before their first listing, and each listing shows its checks and their dates. Then meet the seller and the animal in person before you pay anything, including a deposit. For a breeder’s puppy or kitten, meet its mother too. Ask for the vet check and get papers at handover.
Victorian source numbers are checked on the Pet Exchange Register.
