| Owners rehoming a pet | The same: free to list, with the one-off $9.95 ID check. No separate rehoming fee. |
| Rescues and shelters | Free to list, and once we’ve checked the organisation, the $9.95 ID check is free for the person who runs its account. |
| Featured (not open yet) | $19 for 30 days. Optional. It never renews. |
| Pro (not open yet) | $199 a year, with one Featured listing a month, or $29 a month. On the monthly plan, you can pause for $9 a month. Optional. It renews until you cancel. |
| Founding breeders (not open yet) | Pro at no charge for 12 months, without the monthly Featured listing, for the first 50 breeders to have a founding code applied and for breeders who listed on petsales.net.au before the new site replaced it and ask. We take no card details for the 12 months, and it ends unless you choose a paid plan. The $9.95 ID check is paid as usual. How the founding offer works |
Prices are in Australian dollars, and the price shown is the total you pay, with no GST, card surcharges or booking fees added on top. If GST applies to a fee, it’s already in the price shown.
Victoria’s register fee is separate. Almost every Victorian dog and cat ad needs a source number from the Pet Exchange Register. If you enrol yourself, it costs $25.90 a year, paid to Animal Welfare Victoria, not to us (checked 10 October 2026). See who pays it.
Once listings open, each of your listings shows your dated ID Checked stamp. Where Victoria’s rules apply, listings of dogs already born also show a Source Number Checked stamp: the date we last found your source number active on Victoria’s Pet Exchange Register. It doesn’t show who holds the number, or anything about the animal.
We don’t hold or protect payments between buyers and sellers. Buyers pay sellers directly, and we don’t take any part of what they pay.

The $9.95 ID check
ID checks open with listings. Every seller needs a passed ID check before their first listing goes live.
A one-off $9.95 ID check helps keep scammers off Pet Sales Australia. You photograph your photo ID and take a quick selfie, and Stripe, the payments company we use, checks them. The $9.95 pays for running the check, whatever the result, and covers up to 3 tries, so one blurry photo needn’t cost you another check. We take it only once a check gets a result. After that we don’t refund it for a fail or a change of mind. You keep your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, including to a refund where it gives you one (your consumer rights).
What the ID check is for
A pass puts a dated “ID Checked” stamp on your listings. The first and last name on your ID becomes your checked name. Once listings open, buyers will see it after you reply to their message. On South Australian dog and cat ads, and Tasmanian cattle, sheep, goat and pig ads, the law puts your name on the ad (South Australia’s Dog and Cat Management Regulations 2017, Tasmania’s Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations 2024), so your checked name will show there from the start. We’ll tell buyers to pay only into an account in that name. That makes listing under a false name harder, but can’t rule it out.
No ID check is perfect. A pass doesn’t show that you own the animal, that it’s healthy, or that you’re honest.
Before you pay
- The $9.95 pays for the ID check, not a listing. Before you pay, check your animal can be listed (what can’t be listed) and that you have the numbers your state asks for.
- Use a government photo ID. Stripe says its document checks cover most government-issued documents, such as national IDs, driver licences and passports, from the countries it lists, Australia among them. It also says acceptable documents vary by country (Stripe’s document checks page, checked 21 October 2026). A document Stripe can’t accept counts as a failed try.
- Your information. Our Privacy Policy explains what Stripe and we keep.
How you pay
- On Stripe’s page. Stripe sets aside $9.95 on your card (a hold), but doesn’t take it yet. Then Stripe checks your photo ID and selfie.
- We take the $9.95 when your first try gets a result, pass or fail. Only a try that gets a result counts, so one you decline, close or don’t finish doesn’t.
- If no try gets a result before you cancel, or within about 6 days of paying, we release the hold, the check ends and you pay nothing. A hold lasts up to 7 days, and we release it about a day before it ends.
- How we take payment. Until listings open, we don’t charge for anything. We’ll never ask you, by email or message, for your bank or card details or a sign-in code, or ask you to pay another member.
Your 3 tries
- You have 30 days from the day you approve the payment to use your 3 tries, as long as your first try gets a result within about 6 days.
- If all 3 fail, a new check is another $9.95. Each account and each card can have at most 3 tries with a result in any 30 days, so a new check can start once your first failed try is more than 30 days old.
- Cancelling a check we’ve charged for ends its remaining tries and doesn’t refund the $9.95, so we ask you to confirm first.
When you’d pay again
Your pass can stop being current. For example, if your account stops being a rescue or shelter after a free check, your listings go back to draft until a new $9.95 check passes.
Refunds on the ID check
- If we charged you by mistake, such as twice or with no check done, we refund it.
- If you think a check went wrong, such as Stripe failing your genuine, current ID, email info@petsales.net.au. Don’t send us card or bank numbers, passwords, sign-in codes or ID documents. We’ll look into it and tell you what we found.
- Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply to the ID check (your consumer rights). Otherwise, we don’t refund the $9.95 once a check is done.
Rescues and shelters
Every seller lists free, with a one-off $9.95 ID check. For a rescue or shelter, once we’ve checked the organisation, the $9.95 ID check is free for the person who runs its account. If the organisation doesn’t pass, you can still list: the ID check is then $9.95, as for any seller.
To be checked, choose “Rescue or shelter” as your seller type, and add the organisation’s name and ABN to your seller details. We check that the organisation has:
- an active ABN
- a name that matches the ABN’s record; and
- a charity registration with the ACNC (the charities regulator).
Keep these details current. If you change the ABN or registration in your seller details, we check it again. Tell us if either is cancelled. Until it passes, listings on the free ID check go back to draft, and come back at no charge once it passes. Listings on a paid ID check stay up, but don’t show you as a rescue or shelter. If your account stops being a rescue or shelter, you’ll need a paid $9.95 check to keep listing.
Rescue and Adoption explains how rescues list.
Victoria: the source number fee
Almost every Victorian dog and cat ad needs a source number from the Pet Exchange Register, including ads from owners and rescues. Animal Welfare Victoria says sellers outside Victoria who’ll sell to buyers in Victoria need one too. The register charges its own fee: $25.90 for a new number or a renewal, and a number lasts 12 months (checked 10 October 2026). You pay it to Animal Welfare Victoria when you enrol or renew, not to us. Rescue groups that enrol themselves pay it too.
Domestic animal businesses registered with their council, such as breeding businesses, shelters and pounds, don’t pay it, and nor do foster carers registered with their council: the council enrols them. From 10 April 2027, rescue groups authorised under Victoria’s new pet rehoming scheme get a source number at no cost.
Fees can change, so check the Pet Exchange Register before you apply. How to get a source number.
What paying doesn’t buy
- A stamp. Stamps can’t be bought. The ID check has a fee, but the stamp shows only if the check passes. Nothing else a seller pays for, including Featured and Pro, adds a stamp.
- A hidden boost. Paid placement is always labelled, such as “Featured”. It isn’t a check.
- Ad space. We don’t show display ads.
Refunds and your consumer rights
- Charged twice, the wrong amount, or for something you didn’t get? We refund it.
- The ID check: see Refunds on the ID check.
- If our prices change, we email you at least 30 days before.
- If a change to our terms could leave you worse off, we email you at least 30 days before it takes effect. A change the law requires, or one that only benefits you, can apply sooner. If you don’t accept a change, you can close your account first, and we’ll refund the unused part of anything you’ve paid for, with no fee.
- If we stop or significantly cut back a paid feature during a period you’ve paid for, we refund the unused part.
- Featured and Pro have their own refund rules, which we’ll add here before each opens.
Nothing in our terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law. In short, if our service fails, you can ask us to fix it, or for a refund or compensation, depending on how serious the failure is. In the words the law uses:
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled:
- to cancel your service contract with us; and
- to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value.
You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. If the failure does not amount to a major failure you are entitled to have problems with the service rectified in a reasonable time and, if this is not done, to cancel your contract and obtain a refund for the unused portion of the contract.
To ask for a refund, email info@petsales.net.au with what you paid for and when. We reply within 2 working days to say we’ve got it, and answer in writing within 10 working days. Our Complaints page explains what happens next. You can also go to your state’s consumer agency, such as Consumer Affairs Victoria.
Coming later: Featured and Pro
Not open yet. We’ll add the full rules and refunds for each here before it opens.
- Featured listing: $19 for 30 days. Optional. Your listing carries a “Featured” label. It’s an ad position you pay for, not a check, and it doesn’t promise views, enquiries or a sale. It never renews.
- Pro: $199 a year, with one Featured listing a month, or $29 a month. An optional paid membership for breeders. The Pro badge shows membership, not a check. On the monthly plan, you can pause for $9 a month. Pro is a subscription: it renews until you cancel, and you can cancel online at any time. We’ll list what it includes before it opens.
- Founding breeders: Pro at no charge for 12 months, without the monthly Featured listing. It’s for the first 50 breeders who take up our founding offer and have their code applied, and every breeder who listed on petsales.net.au before the new site replaced it and asks. Your 12 months start when your code is applied, once Pro opens and your ID check passes. We take no card details for it, and it ends unless you choose a paid plan. The $9.95 ID check and Featured are paid as usual.
To get a founding code, email info@petsales.net.au and ask. If you listed on petsales.net.au before, email from the address you used then. Or, when you join the list as a breeder, tick “Also email me Pet Sales Australia news and offers, including the founding breeder offer.” You don’t need to tick it to get a code, and every email from the list has an unsubscribe link that works without signing in. Getting a code doesn’t hold one of the 50 places, and nor does joining the list: they go in the order codes are applied.
